Climate and Biodiversity Action Officer, Co Mayo
Climate Action Louisburgh Locality (CALL) is a not-for-profit organisation of volunteers working together for a sustainable future. We carry out actions to promote the reduction of carbon emissions and waste while facilitating biodiversity enhancement in our locality in south west Mayo. The group is organised in multiple subgroups (e.g. Sustainable Energy, Carbon Sequestration and Biodiversity) which carry out specific tasks. We are ambitious, with plans which include:
- Enhancing biodiversity every way we can through habitat restoration and native tree planting schemes.
- Engaging with our community on climate crisis and environmental issues so as to encourage increased participation.
- Enabling most local houses to achieve BER B2 rating.
- Achieving community self-sufficiency in electricity generation via solar PV and wind.
- Developing high levels of sustainable mobility in our area.

Climate and Biodiversity Action Officer
As the organisation grows and its reach expands, we are searching for an impactful Action Officer who will work with an Action Leader and a team of passionate volunteers. The Action Officer will support ongoing CALL efforts, assist with the delivery of projects, and in sourcing funding initiatives that will support our development.
Position: Climate and Biodiversity Action Officer
Location: Louisburgh area, south-west Mayo
Contract: Part-time initially, with flexible hours, initially working from home on a 1 day per week basis; ultimately, as funding becomes available, office based in Louisburgh on a 3-5 day week basis.
The role will involve assisting the CALL board of directors and eventually the Action Leader in the administration of a variety of projects and funding applications. Public relations activities, including print media, online and social media will be another key part of the role.
Pay: The successful applicant will commence on a salary equivalent to approximately €40,000 per annum but on a 1 day per week basis initially – so, around €160 per working day. It is anticipated that as further funding becomes available the salary will increase.
Model of working: Working from home with local in-person meetings with members of the group and collaborators. We are currently sourcing funding for an Action Leader and expect to fill this role later in the year.
As the group grows and the contract hours increase, these activities might be reframed in subsequent contracts.
Qualifications and skills required
– A third-level qualification in sustainability, environmental science, science communication, social science or other relevant area. Consideration will also be given to applicants who demonstrate relevant practical experience in the sector.
- – 5 years’ proven experience in office or project administration
- – Good communication skills, both oral and written.
- – Public relations and promotional skills in print, broadcast and social media.
- – Knowledge of, or a strong interest in, environmental issues and sustainability.
- – The ability to inspire and motivate peers to engage with environmental issues.
- – The candidate must own his/her own computer and phone and have internet access.
- – IT skills, particularly Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
- – Strong organisational skills, excellent interpersonal skills, a flexible and enthusiastic approach to work, professionalism and reliability
